Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
