Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
