The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
