The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
