Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing angels, demons, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the party reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This means them few options but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on the recent installment’s follow-up content, we discover that the warrior group will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can expect finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on October 24.
